My Initial Thoughts on the Spring 2016 Anime Season

It’s that time of the year again. A new season of anime has started up and I think it is time to tell you watch my thoughts are on the first episode of everything that I have seen so far. If you are here to come looking for descriptions on shows then you are looking at the wrong post, if this is the case then I suggest you check out my Most Anticipated Anime of Spring 2016 post. Instead what you will find in this post is what my thoughts are on the shows and whether or not if I will be continuing it for here on out.

For those who haven’t known me for very long. All you need to know is that every season of anime, is that I always plan to watch a small select few older series alongside the season weekly and you can find those shows at the bottom of this post.

Also would like to point out my favorite anime openings and endings of this season so far.

Best Opening Theme: Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto
Best Ending Theme: Mobile Suit Gundam UC RE:0096 AND Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress… why? Because Aimer x Sawano… that’s why.

==================================================================

Ace Attorney
Man oh man, what a disappointment. This anime is AWFUL. The art/animation looks stiff and low quality. The directing is extremely uninspired and sloppily done. The character personalities are way too outlandish that it did nothing but annoy me and made me feel like I was being treated like a child… Dropped.

Big Order
The episode releases April 15, which I don’t feel like waiting till then too post this list. So I might as well tell you that I will be watching it unless if I cringe till no end while watching this show. If anyone was aware… I f***ing despise Big Order’s older sibling series Mirai Nikki, which is by the same mangaka and studio. I never do this but I will probably watch it only to laugh at how bad the series is.

Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV
For being only ten minutes long and announced last second, so I did not expect much from it at all. However, I must say that I am honestly impressed at the amount of quality that A-1 put into this ova. Overall it wasn’t really that interesting and felt all over the place while still being a poor introduction to the upcoming video game.

Bungou Stray Dogs
Cool first episode, however the series isn’t anything too special tho I would say that I enjoyed it. Currently this show has my favorite cast of characters this season so far besides Boku no Hero Academia. One thing about this show that stands out about this series is how it’s a giant homage to multiple different famous Japanese authors and mangakas, and this is done by having every single character be named after and author while also having a power based off of one of the author’s previous works. Personally I believe that the show won’t do anything exceptionally memorable, but I am looking forward to 24 episodes of fun.

Endride
I was bored out of my mind. All it is just mindless fujoshi bait… Dropped.

Flying Witch
This first episode was so calm and relaxing that it just kept me so interested and involved in the world. Sometimes having a more simplistic approach is all it takes to make for a good series. So far I don’t know everything about this world or the witch girl, but what I do know is that it doesn’t really matter in the long run. All that matters about a show like this is one that is slow and relaxing yet is also really enjoyable at the same time, which is everything I could ever ask for. I enjoyed this first episode so much that it felt like it was only five minutes long, and that is an impressive feat. Overall this was a great slice of life with absolutely jaw dropping visuals at the same time, I am looking forward to watching more of this series in the future.

Joker Game
Never trust anyone. This is the vibe that I got from the show and I loved it. I can already tell that it will be a cool character drama with a major clash of ideologies, which is something that I am really looking forward to seeing. Judging how this show is set Pre-WWII, I hope to see it lead up to the events of the war. So far this show has lived up to my high expectations of it and is one that I highly recommend… why? Because I am predicting that this will be the next Shouwa Genroku… Anime of the Season. All I need to see more of it is to try to distinguish each of the characters, because I can barely tell one character from another.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Gotta be honest, this series is surprisingly a lot better than I thought it would be. Before we begin I need to address the elephant in the room, and this is how this show is extremely similar to the famous series that I’m sure that everyone reading this has seen or at least heard of… Attack on Titan. I personally believe that with this first episode, however it does have a very big possibility to be a better series than it’s sister series. The biggest thing that I enjoy more about this show compared to AoT is how the MC is an intellectual badass. He is someone who is willing to injure himself in order to conduct his crazy experiments of his and even goes to the extreme to torture himself for the sake of surviving. The MC is cool calm and collected, while also is not afraid to stand up for others. Another thing I love about this show over AoT is how there is a real sense of danger in the show, it is as if you can see the fear in the character’s body language. The townspeople do not have their shit together and how they are still trying to figure things out. But the main thing that I find cool about the townspeople is how they are discriminatory of others out of fear, just like how the Germans treated the Jews back in World War II. I also wanted to mention how the art/animation are on point and so is the godlike music. Really looking forward to see where this goes from here on out…one other thing… WE FINALLY HAVE A PROPER ZOMBIE ANIME!!!… Sorry Gakkou Gurashi.

Kagewani Shou
More monsters, most mysteries, more murders, more average at best animation, and more literal creepiness in an anime that I have never seen before. If anyone was unaware this is an sequel to an anime short that came out last Fall 2015 season and went widely unnoticed. Personally I love the show for the actual creepiness that it gives off, it is a good show to watch in between episodes, but not something that I would go out of my way to recommend people to go watch. If you are interested then give it a shot, I am interested in hearing what your thoughts are on the show.

Kiznaiver
The show had just a mediocre start at best. It doesn’t mean it’s bad in any sense of the word, but I have to say that this first episode did not meet my high expectations. Over all I got some heavy Kokoro Connect vibes from this episode, more specifically from the last few minutes. Anyways, it is worth watching imo and likewise that I will continue seeing where this goes because Trigger :3

My Hero Academia
Oh my god… If people were unaware, I am a manga reader of this series. I absolutely am in love with this series. All I have to say is that the first episode adapted the first chapter flawlessly, however it did not only meet expectations it exceeds them. Must I say, this series only gets better from here on out. The only thing I am disappointed about this anime, is how it is thirteen episodes. All of the best parts of the series will not be adapted, which saddens me.

Re:Zero
Gotta be honest with you all. Currently I am puzzled by this series. The first episode was split into two parts in which the first half of the show was just really boring and just made me less and less interested about continuing. However the second half was a little bit more interesting with the time reset mechanic set in place. The show established itself to not be afraid of killing off characters just like that. Thing is… I’m scared for this show to just become the next Akame ga Kill, or something along that lines. Because already, right off the bat… I hate all of the characters from this show. One other thing that bothers me is how he was thrown into a fantasy world randomly and doesn’t question it and asks extremely normal, meanwhile when the time reset happened he was completely confused and thought he was going crazy… WHAT.

Anyways, I will be giving this show five more episodes to impress me.

Space Patrol Luluco
This show is just “So Trigger”. It is cute, funny, and is an interesting combination of everything that Trigger and Old Gainax stood for. For being only 7 minutes long, you would have to be crazy to not watch this.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless
Every once in awhile I am in need of a good slice of life series just to calm me down from all the action and drama packed into one series. This show Tanaka-kun seems to be that breath of fresh air. It does not do anything outlandish or crazy to be interesting like Sakamoto, but instead all it needs is just a good nap… literally. This show’s protagonist is so relatable to me that it is scary. He is lazy all the time, loves the outdoors, but never wants to go anywhere with friends all while wishing he could be someone else. All of these traits are literally me. So I will be having a fun time enjoying this show for the rest of the season with the off chance that I do not get bored of it.

The Lost Village “Mayoiga”
Mayoiga is just that kind of show that could go one of two ways: Be Amazing or Be Shit. So far the show established an eerie vibe to it that is ripe for blood and murder, and with a cast as massive of thirt. I have no doubt that this is where the show will be heading and I am ready for it. Also Lion is best girl in the series, and the song they sang on the bus was creepy af. Will be continuing to see where this goes.

Ushio to Tora 2nd Season (Season 1 Review)
This show does nothing but make me more and more excited every time I watch it. I am in love with this show and it’s characters. If you people saw my review of season one, you would notice how this show was my favorite series of 2015. With this first episode, it has only reignited my love of this show. I am so excited to continue this show all the way to the end. I highly recommend.

==================================================================

Library War (2008)
I would like to say that this series isn’t for everyone, but for book lovers and those interested in another military show to watch… then I suggest you check this out. So far I love how imperfect the female lead is and can tell I will probably end up really liking her. I find the concept a little bit strange but it is kinda similar (not really) to Shimoneta in terms of having the government ban on a certain everyday thing, in Library War’s case it is of course books… but in Shimoneta’s case it is pornography. Either way, I think I will enjoy this series tho I don’t expect too much from it other than a fun watch.

Junketsu no Maria (2015)
That was a better start than I thought it would be. Loved the realistism of the battle technique used during the time period that the show takes place in… like it’s EXTREMELY realistic. I want to see more battles later on. However I do not expect to see it be part of the main plot of the series, rather more of an every once and awhile occurrence. Tho I am not entirely sold on any of the characters yet. I just do not have any idea where the story will be going from here on out.

Natsume’s Book of Friends (2008)
Slow and relaxing. Natsume I can tell will be a nice Slice of Life series, one in which gives me some major Ushio to Tora vibes just without any of the action. If anyone knows me, you would know that I absolutely adore UTT and so far I believe this will he the same with Natsume’s Book of Friends. The show seems to have not aged well but I can deal with that. The MC seems kind of forgettable at the moment, but I’m sure that will change over time. Also that cat/dragon thing is awesome. Overall I am sure looking forward to seeing what else this series has to offer… hopefully I can catch up in time for Season 5 this Fall 2016 anime season.

==================================================================

For those of you who have been able to read through all my non-sensical opinions. I thank and applaud you for doing so. And for those who just scroll to the very bottom just for the sake of it, then shame on you. Anyways, these are my quick thoughts on the new Spring 2016 season of anime and you probably won’t be seeing another seasonal related blog post of mine until thirteen weeks from now and you can see me make this list all over again… so that will be fun I guess.

Anyways time to go back to having all my freetime being sucked up by school work because I am extremely busy right now with tech for my school’s play “Much To Do About Nothing”… so if by the off chance that you are confused as to why I don’t have another review out… welp you now know why.

    1. Personally I loved Flying Witch, it’s a slice of life series. So you shouldnt be expecting much from it in terms of story and what not. Just a good set of characters & their interactions between one another.

I can get into slice of life anime but this one didn’t grab me right away.

If it’s not on your list, Bakuon is off to a pretty good start. If motorbikes interest you then you’ll probably like it. Haifuri also had a good first ep too, boats and stuff. It really reminded me of KanColle except none of the characters are anthropomorphized boats this time.

    1. I’m not a huge fan of series like those, it wasn’t a mistake that I neglected to watch those two.

Personally I really hated KanColle, so that comment is more of a negative vs being a positive. And for Bakuon, im not really interested in watching a series of entirely girls riding motorcycles… I’m more interested in Yowamushi pedal & overdrive.

Oh dear, Phoenix Wright looks awful in that pic. Such a shame, as the games’ fanbase deserve better.

    1. Here’s another picture of how poorly animated it is.

Left side = Studio Bones’ game intro.
Right Side = A-1’s anime adaptation.

So I have to ask: after a couple more eps of Mayoiga, what are your thoughts on the show now? Because I think its turned out quite funny in all the wrong ways, but not funny enough to keep me watching.

    1. Cant say yet really. I’ve still only seen the first episode for it. I’ve been quite busy lately to even watch anime, hense why I missed a review last week (and will try to get one this week but there’s this little problem of me being stuck in a school for atleast 14 hours every day this week).

I haven’t really watched anything from this season’s anime yet, but I am definitely interested in seeing My Hero Academia! I saw the first episode last week and I was very impressed! Hopefully, the series will get additional episodes as it becomes more popular!

    1. I really hope so too. My favorite parts of the manga wont be getting adapted from the first season which saddens me.

Also I suggest you try some other shows from this season as well. There are some really great shows airing currently.

This season looks promising (Joker Game and Kabaneri) but I’m going to wait until the end before picking which ones to watch. Too many animes start well and end with disappointment. But thanks for the succinct breakdown 😛
